Internal Family Systems
You have probably noticed it in yourself: the part that wants to speak up in a meeting and the part that stays quiet to avoid conflict. The part that wants closeness and the part that pulls away the moment it gets close. IFS starts from the idea that this is not a contradiction or a character flaw, it is how minds are structured. Internal Family Systems therapy works directly with these different parts of you rather than treating them as symptoms to eliminate. Healing In Therapy offers IFS across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, in person and through secure virtual sessions.
What Is IFS Therapy?
A "part" simply means a distinct pattern of thoughts, feelings, or behaviour that takes over in certain situations, like the critical voice after a mistake or the urge to shut down during conflict. "Self" refers to the calm, grounded core underneath all of those parts, the version of you that can observe a reaction rather than being completely run by it.
Parts often fall into three broad roles. Managers try to keep things under control and prevent pain, showing up as perfectionism, planning, or people-pleasing. Firefighters react once pain has already broken through, showing up as avoidance, numbing, or impulsive behaviour. Exiles carry the original hurt, often from earlier in life, and are the parts the other two roles are working to protect.
How IFS Works
Sessions are collaborative and paced by what feels workable for you, not scripted from a manual. Your therapist helps you notice which part is present in a given moment and get curious about it rather than immediately trying to change or suppress it. Sessions typically run 50 to 60 minutes.
Who IFS Can Help
- A harsh inner critic that feels impossible to quiet
- Feeling like different parts of you want conflicting things
- Complex trauma or attachment wounds
- Chronic people-pleasing or difficulty setting boundaries
- Self-destructive patterns that persist despite understanding why they happen
- A sense of internal fragmentation, or feeling like you do not know who you really are
- Wanting a gentler alternative to approaches that felt confrontational or symptom-focused
What Changes with IFS
- Less internal conflict: Competing urges feel less like a tug-of-war and more like a negotiation you can lead.
- A quieter inner critic: The critical part softens once it no longer feels like the only thing keeping you safe.
- Greater self-compassion: Parts that once felt shameful become understandable.
- More access to calm under pressure: You can respond from Self more often, rather than being taken over by a reactive part.
- Better relationships: As internal conflict eases, so does the tendency to project it outward onto others.
Why Choose IFS at Healing In Therapy
Our therapists working with IFS clients across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Canada are trained in the approach and often integrate it with EMDR or somatic methods depending on what a client's system needs.
