Why Your Nervous System Isn't Broken: Understanding Polyvagal Theory and Trauma Response

If you've ever felt your heart race before you could explain why, gone silent when you wanted to speak, been flooded with panic in a situation that looked safe on paper, or gone numb and disconnected when you expected to feel something, you already know what it's like to be at the mercy of your own nervous system. These experiences are not signs of weakness, overreaction, or being "too sensitive." They are signs of a nervous system doing exactly what it was built to do.
Polyvagal theory, developed by neuroscientist Dr. Stephen Porges, gives us a framework for understanding why the body responds the way it does under stress, and why those responses, however uncomfortable, are acts of biological intelligence rather than personal failure. What Is Polyvagal Theory?
Polyvagal theory centres on the autonomic nervous system (ANS), the part of the nervous system operating below conscious awareness. It regulates breathing, heart rate, digestion, and the body's response to perceived threat, all without any deliberate effort on your part. "Autonomic" comes from "autonomous": it runs itself.
The ANS is constantly scanning your environment for cues of safety and danger. It's doing this right now, as you read. It's doing it in every conversation, every room you walk into, every relationship you navigate. Porges named this unconscious scanning process neuroception, and it happens faster than conscious thought.
Central to the theory is the vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve in the body, running from the brainstem through the heart, lungs, and gut. "Polyvagal" means many-vagal, referring to the multiple pathways of this nerve and the different states they produce.
The Three Nervous System States (The Polyvagal Ladder)
Clinician Deb Dana, who has extensively applied Porges's work in therapy, uses a ladder as a way to picture the three states the nervous system moves through. The top of the ladder is the safest and most connected state. As the system detects threat, it moves down.
Ventral vagal: safe and connected. Calm, curious, present, engaged. You can think clearly, feel emotion without being overwhelmed, and connect genuinely with others. Breathing is steady, the face is expressive, laughter comes easily. This is the state that supports learning, healing, intimacy, and play.
Sympathetic: mobilized for survival. Anxious, activated, hypervigilant, restless. Heart racing, breathing shallow, muscles tense, mind scanning for threat. This shows up as fight (anger, the urge to attack) or flight (anxiety, the urge to escape or avoid). It's an adaptive response to real danger. It becomes a problem when the threat-detection system fires in situations that aren't actually life-threatening.
Dorsal vagal: shutdown and collapse. Numb, flat, disconnected. A sense of watching life from behind glass. Dissociation, depression, going through the motions. This is the most ancient survival response: when fight or flight can't resolve the threat, the body conserves energy by shutting down. It's a last resort, not a failure.
Neuroception: How Your Body Decides What's Safe
Neuroception is the continuous, unconscious process your nervous system runs to assess danger. It reads cues from three sources at once: the environment (sound, light, familiarity), other people (facial expression, tone of voice, eye contact), and your own internal sensations (heart rate, breath, gut feeling). It assembles all of this into a moment-to-moment read on safety, and shifts your state accordingly, often before you're consciously aware anything has happened.
This matters clinically because the nervous system responds to its assessment of threat, not to objective reality. A room can be entirely safe and still trigger a full survival response, because the body is pattern-matching against past experience, not present fact.
How Trauma Recalibrates the Nervous System
After experiences of significant threat, neglect, or chronic stress, the nervous system recalibrates its detection settings. It learns which cues once predicted danger, and it becomes more sensitive to those cues going forward, sometimes activating survival responses in situations that are now objectively safe.
This isn't a malfunction. It's the nervous system being an excellent learner. The difficulty is that it generalizes: it keeps protecting you from threats that no longer exist, using outdated information. Understanding this reframes what it means to be "triggered." It isn't irrationality. It's a well-adapted system working from an old map.
Co-Regulation: Why Relationships Are Regulating
One of polyvagal theory's most clinically important contributions is the concept of the social engagement system, the neural circuitry connecting the ventral vagal state to the face, voice, and social behaviour. When you're in ventral vagal, this system is active: your face is expressive, your voice carries warmth, and you're genuinely available for connection.
This works in both directions. A regulated nervous system can directly influence the nervous system state of another person nearby. When someone with a settled nervous system is genuinely present with you, warm face, calm voice, real attention, your body receives that as a signal of safety. This is co-regulation, and it isn't a luxury. It's a biological necessity that the nervous system relies on to develop the capacity for self-regulation in the first place, typically starting in infancy through a caregiver's responsiveness to distress.
This is also why therapy can be healing in a way insight alone often isn't. A therapeutic relationship that is warm, safe, and consistently present offers the body a corrective experience of co-regulation, sometimes for the first time.
What Regulation Actually Looks Like
Regulation doesn't mean the absence of stress or difficult emotion. It means the capacity to move through activation or shutdown and find your way back to ventral vagal. Signs of this capacity include being able to stay present without constantly scanning for threat, feeling difficult emotions without being swept away by them, staying in genuine contact with another person, thinking clearly under pressure, and being able to rest and sleep.
Practical Ways to Support Your Nervous System
Regulation capacity builds gradually, through repeated experiences of safety. Some evidence-informed starting points, best explored alongside a therapist rather than in isolation:
Slow, extended exhalation, which activates the ventral vagal brake
Humming, chanting, or singing, which directly stimulates the vagus nerve
Cold water on the face, which triggers the mammalian diving reflex and slows heart rate
Safe, attuned social contact
Gentle, rhythmic movement such as walking, swimming, or yoga
Mindful body awareness: noticing and naming your state without judgment
Choosing a Trauma-Informed, Nervous System-Aware Therapist
Not every therapeutic approach addresses the nervous system directly. If your struggles involve hypervigilance, shutdown, dissociation, or reactions that feel disproportionate to the present moment, it's worth seeking a therapist trained in trauma-informed, somatic, or nervous system-based approaches, someone who can help you map your own patterns: what states you move into, what cues trigger them, and what helps you return to safety.
Your Nervous System Is Not Broken
One of the most significant shifts polyvagal theory offers is a change in how we talk about these responses. In everyday language, anxiety is a problem to fix, numbness is a symptom to eliminate, anger is a loss of control. Polyvagal theory reframes each of these as a nervous system state with its own internal logic, shaped by past experience, doing exactly what it learned to do.
This reframe has real clinical weight. Meeting a sympathetic state with curiosity rather than judgment, my nervous system has detected threat and is mobilizing, rather than I'm falling apart, can begin to shift the state itself. Shame keeps the nervous system dysregulated. Compassion opens the door to change.
The goal of therapy isn't to eliminate your survival responses. It's to widen the conditions under which your nervous system can find its way back to safety, and to help you build a different relationship with the system that has been trying to protect you all along.
